Yakov Belopolsky

Yakov Belopolsky  is a Manager of Research and Development for Bel Stewart. Yakov has degrees in Solid State Physics and Mechanical Engineering. Yakov is a Senior Member of IEEE,

He is a member of the US Technical Advisory Groups on Connectors and Cabling and an IEC/ISO Expert on Connecting Hardware. Yakov Belopolsky authored over 30 technical publications and was granted 72 US patents.

 

 

 

Mike Bennett

Senior Network Engineer at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory

 

Mr. Bennett is a Senior Network Engineer at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory with over 28 years of combined experience in electronics and enterprise networking.  He co-manages the LBLnet Services Group which is
responsible for operating and maintaining the Lab's campus area network, a LAN with over 13,000 attached devices. Mike is an IEEE standards association member, a contributor of end-user's perspective to a number of Ethernet standards and is Chair of the IEEE P802.3az Energy Efficient Ethernet Task Force.

 

 

 

Wael William Diab

Technical Director, Office of the CTO - Broadcom Corporation

 

Wael William Diab is currently a Technical Director in the Office of the CTO working on long-term technical strategy for Broadcom’s Enterprise Networking Group. Previously, he held the role of Director, Marketing in Broadcom’s Enterprise computing and Networking infrastructure Group (ENG). Prior to Broadcom, he worked at Cisco for nine years in various technical, architectural and business leadership roles, focused on next generation networking products and technologies.

Wael is an active member and contributor within the IEEE standards community. He was Secretary of IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet), Chief Editor for the EFM (Ethernet in the First Mile, 802.3ah) standard, and has been a key contributor on previous and subsequent Ethernet projects. He was also a key member of the team at Cisco that delivered the first Gigabit Ethernet, EFM and PoE (Power over Ethernet) products to the industry.

Today, Wael serves as Vice-Chair of all IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet). He is a member of the IEEE-SA Standards Board RevCom Committee. In addition to IEEE, Wael has served as Director and Secretary of the Board for EFM Alliance (EFMA), Vice-Chair of the MSAD group in the FTTH Council.

Mr. Diab is a published author, co-authoring the book "Ethernet in the First Mile: Access for Everyone" and contributing author to several other books. At Cisco Mr. Diab served as a technology research Director and was a member of Cisco's University Research Board championing multiple grants. Mr. Diab also served on Cisco's Patent Committee and currently sits on Broadcom's patent review committee.

Mr. Diab holds BS and MS degrees in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University, a BA degree in Economics from Stanford, and an MBA with honors from the Wharton School of Business. He has developed over fifty patents in the networking space.

 

 

 

Alan Flatman

Principal Consultant, LAN Technologies

 

Alan Flatman is an industry specialist in Cabling and LANs. He has over 30 years experience in the electronics and computer industries, and has advised on network technology and strategy since 1980.

In 1993, he formed LAN Technologies, a UK-based independent consultancy business whose clients include UK Government, major end users within Europe, Middle-East, Africa and Asia, plus a wide range of suppliers from the cabling and LAN industries.

Alan has been an active contributor to IEEE 802 since 1981 and represents the UK at both International and European cabling standards committees. For the last 15 years, he has also provided the formal link between IEEE 802.3 and the ISO/IEC cabling standards group as liaison officer. His contribution to the industry is witnessed by over 50 publications including contributions to books on LANs and the deployment of information technology in the workplace. Much of the professional advice supplied as a consultant is associated with the intercept of next generation standards plus compliance aspects.

Alan Flatman holds a 1st class honors degree in Electronic Engineering and a Ph.D in Electronics & Computing. He is also a Chartered Engineer and a Fellow of the UK Institution of Engineering & Technology.

 

 

 

David Hess

Technical Manager for LAN - Nexans Corporation

 

David Hess has worked for more than 30 years in development in both fields of electronic and photonic data communication cabling. He is currently employed as a technical manager for LAN Standardization within Nexans Research and Development at its Data Communications Competence Center located at Berk-Tek in New Holland, Pennsylvania, USA. He is an active participant on various data communications, interface and network cabling standards committees in IEC, ISO/IEC/JTC1, TIA, ICEA, EIA, INCITS and IEEE; including the TIA TR42 Cabling Committee since 1989 and the ISO/IEC/JTC1/SC25 and IEC SC46C Cabling Committees since 1993. He has participated in related TIA, IEEE, and INCITS interface standards committees since 1985 and has been Project Leader for 2 international standards. He received a B.S. degree in Mathematics from Pennsylvania State University and is member of IEEE.

Mohsen Kavehrad

CICTR Director and W.L. Weiss Professor of Electrical Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University

 

Mohsen Kavehrad is the W.L. Weiss (AMERITECH) Endowed Chair Professor of Electrical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Polytechnic University. After working for companies such as Fairchild Industries, GTE, and Bell Laboratories he joined the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ottawa as a full professor and director of the Broadband Communications Research Laboratory. Since January 1997, he has been with the Pennsylvania State University EE Department as W.L. Weiss Chair Professor and founding Director of Center for Information and Communications Technology Research (CICTR).  He also was the CTO and a vice president at Tele-Beam Inc., State College, PA, and has served as a consultant to major corporations and government agencies. He is a Fellow of the IEEE for his contributions to wireless communications and optical networking. He received 3 Bell Labs awards for his contributions to wireless communications, the 1990 TRIO feedback award for a patent on an optical interconnect, 2009 DesignCon Paper Award in the High-Speed and RF Design Category, 2001 IEEE VTS Neal Shepherd best paper award, 3 IEEE Lasers and Electro-Optics Society best paper awards between 1991-95 and a Canada NSERC PhD-thesis award in 1995, with his graduate students for contributions to wireless systems and optical networks.  He has over 330 published papers, several book chapters, books, and patents in these areas. His current research interests are in the areas of technologies, systems, and network architectures that enable the vision of the information age.

 

 

 

Valerie Maguire and Christian Acuna

Global Sales Engineer and Signal Integrity Engineer - The Siemon Company

 

Valerie Maguire holds the position of Global Sales Engineer at The Siemon Company.  Her expertise is focused in the fields of balanced twisted-pair and optical fiber telecommunications cabling, connecting hardware, and cables.  Valerie actively participates in working groups responsible for the development and publication of telecommunications standards such as TIA/EIA-568-B-2, TIA/EIA-568-B.2-1 (category 6), and newly published TIA-568-B.2-10 (category 6A).  She is the chair of the TIA TR-42.7 copper cabling sub-committee, TIA TR-42 appointed liaison to IEEE 802.3, and document editor for the next edition TIA-568-C.2 Standard.  Valerie holds one U.S. Patent and received her B.S.E.E. degree from the University of Connecticut.

 

Christian D. Acuna holds the position of Signal Integrity Engineer at The Siemon Company, a structured cabling company based in Watertown, CT. His main responsibilities include supporting research and development projects related to structured cabling and intelligent mapping systems. In addition to testing and validation, his research focuses on electromagnetic simulation of network interfaces; specifically printed circuit boards and connectors.  
He is a member of IEEE and holds a B.S. degree in electrical engineering and an MBA, both from the University of Connecticut.

 

 

 

Scott Powell

Senior Engineering Director - Broadcom Corporation

 

Scott Powell received B.S. and M.S. degrees in electrical engineering from Oregon State University and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of California, San Diego.  In 1994, he co-founded dQdt Corporation developing soft IP macros for high speed physical layer ASICs.  In 1999, he joined Centerpoint Broadband Technologies as lead system architect developing high speed digital modems.  He joined Broadcom Corporation in 2002 and is currently Senior Engineering Director of the Ethernet PHY group responsible for 10/100/1000/10G twisted pair copper PHY development.   Scott has over 40 patents issued or pending.

 

 

 

George Zimmerman

CTO - Solarflare Communications Corporation

 

George Zimmerman is the CTO for the physical layer (PHY) line of business and founder of Solarflare Communications. He is an acknowledged expert in wireline communications and has been a defining force in the development of 10GBASE-T as well as various DSL technologies. Dr. Zimmerman’s technical interests focus on communications and signal processing near the fundamental limits and energy efficiency.  As CTO, he is responsible for Solarflare's core physical layer technology development and technical direction of its PHY products. His tutorial initiated the formation of the IEEE 10GBASE-T Study Group, and, drove the technical content of the 802.3an-2006 10GBASE-T standard.  Prior to founding SolarFlare, Dr. Zimmerman was Chief Scientist & VP of Strategic Planning at PairGain Technologies. He drove basic technology development and standardization for DSL, as well as new market and business development strategy, including mergers and acquisitions. Before PairGain, Dr. Zimmerman was with Caltech and NASA/JPL where he was responsible for signal processing R&D for NASA’s Deep Space Network. He holds a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Caltech, and an undergraduate degree from Stanford University.  He is currently the co-author of the blog “Up and Down the Network Stack” at http://www.10gigabitethernet.typepad.com.
